This is a fan made website of the Australian movie "Van Diemen's Land". This website isn't the official movie web page nor does it claim to be. Now that we've got that out of the way let's have a look at the trailer for this masterpiece of a movie.
Well hello there and thank you for coming to Van Diemen's Land fan appreciation website. My name is Johnni Elliot and I'm a photographer from Sydney, Australia. Ever since I was little I was in love with photography. As I got older my other love surfaced, which was cinematography. My first love and hobby, photography, became my day job and I wouldn't want it any other way.
Cinematography became my hobby and I get to enjoy it through watching movies. Of course I have other hobbies. Some of them go with the territory like flying high quality video capture drones. Watching movies takes the bulk of my free time though, and that's what brought me to creating this website. I don't normally create a fan appreciation page for every movie I view, but I had to for this one, since Van Dieman's Land is an Australian film.
So now that you know a little bit about me, let's talk about the actual reason for the existence of this website. I'm of course talking about the "Van Diemen's Land" movie. It was a couple of months ago that I first watched it. Initially I didn't think I will fall in love with the movie so much. Watching the movie was more of a chore. Since it's an Australian movie it had to be watched. I'm Australian, it was therefore a matter of national pride. Given my background it's no surprise that I first fell in love with the movie cinematography and costume design. Seeing how this movie was shot on an extremely small budget I can see the flyover shots of the movie being made with high quality drone that follows you.
Movie itself takes place in the 1822, in Tasmania and is based on a true story. Back then Tasmania was still part of the British Empire, and it was called Van Diemen's Land. Sarah Island was one of the islands in the chain and it was used as a penal colony. According to the account that the movie is bade on, one day 8 prisoners escaped Sarah Island and decided to trek through the Tasmanian wilderness in order to reach civilization. Trouble was that none of the prisoners who escaped knew how to hunt and fish. There were no shops on their long journey through the harsh wilderness of Tasmania. I think you can guess where this story goes from here. Be warned that there are major movie spoiler from this point on.
The seven men started their journey very enthusiastically but they soon became hungry. Seeing how none of them was able to hunt or fish, they had to turn to cannibalism in order to survive. That is the basic premise of the movie, and it sounds at the same time very interesting, but a tad bit repulsive. According to the story only one man ended up reaching the populated portions of the island of Tasmania, Alexander Pearce. He is the central character of the movie. I'm not entirely sure if he's the protagonist or the antagonist, to be honest. Story that the movie tells is very interesting, especially when you consider the fact that it's based on actual historical events.
What I really enjoyed about the movie were the beautiful natural sights that director Jonathan auf der Heide decided to use for their filming locations. Recently I watched the movie Revenant and I was of course amazed at the movie quality. While watching Revenent I couldn't help but draw lines with Van Diemen's Land. They are no where near the same quality, let me make that clear. It's pretty obvious that The Revenant has a higher production budget, better cast, director, etc. It is overall a much better movie. But the both films get off the same kind of vibe.
One aspect of the movie in particular I love is the aerial shots used in the movie and how good they are. Since the movie had very small budget I doubt it that they were able to rent a helicopter to record those shots. My guess is that those are made using some high quality FPV drones under $100, with good quality cameras. On a couple of occasions I had to use similar setup when recording a video clips for local businesses. Let me tell you that I know firsthand that recording something like that isn't easy. Especially at the level of quality that can be seen in Van Diemen's Land. That alone makes the movie that much more awesome for me.
OK, now that we've covered the basics of the movie, let's talk a little bit about this website. Why exactly it is that I started it and what I intend to do with it. Like I already mentioned in the introduction, it's because I'm a huge fan of the movie. Seeing such a great film being made in the land down under really makes me proud to be Australian. On this website I will post some basic info about the movie. Things like cast info, list of songs from the movie soundtrack, list the awards that the movie received, etc.
On top of that I will run a news section where I'll post news things about the movie that I come across. This can be things that I pick up on in the news relating to the movie, new historical angles from which a particular scene in the movie can be viewed, or hopefully new film ideas from the team responsible for Van Diemen's Land. I really hope that they get together once again and work on a new project. This movie was great and I'm sure that the next one they will create, should they decide to actually do it, will be great as well.
Van Diemen's Land, the website, this website that you're on right now, is my own little baby but I don't have anything against people trying to join in on the party. If you are also a fan of this movie and would like to contribute to the website in any way I am here to listen to what you have to say. If there is info that I posted which is wrong and you want to correct me, send me a message. If you have a cool new info or just an interesting fact about the movie, by all means send me a message and I'll post about it. You get the basic idea of what I'm getting at here. Any kind of info that you might have, just send me a message. There is a contact page with contact details located over here. I guess that's it for now. I hope to hear from you soon. Cheers.
